Giving a complex public-private initiative one recognisable identity.

Giving a complex public-private initiative one recognisable identity.

Background

The Aichi Digital Health Consortium brings together government, industry and academia around digital health and innovation.

It needed an identity that could represent those very different stakeholders while still feeling simple enough to work everywhere from official communications to public-facing materials.

Challenge

Create an identity that felt distinctly connected to Aichi, represented collaboration rather than any single organisation, and could eventually work beyond Japan.

What I did

I worked closely with stakeholders to understand the consortium’s mission, ambitions and relationships before translating them into six initial visual directions.

Through discussion and iteration with my designer, the identity evolved around the Japanese idea of "musubi" (結び), or connection. Intersecting lines and points became a simple visual representation of government, industry and academia coming together.

Outcome

The identity was officially unveiled by Aichi Prefecture on 5 June 2024 and subsequently applied across public communications, including materials aimed at older audiences.

More importantly, the consortium now had a visual system capable of representing a complicated network of organisations as one initiative.
